Klopp gives Karius chance to be No 1
Loris Karius will keep his place for today's Premier League visit of Hull City, as Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp offers his new goalkeeper a chance to become first-choice No 1.
Karius was given his debut against Derby County in the EFL Cup in midweek, but had little to do in the 3-0 victory.
Now Klopp wants a closer look at the 23-year-old against tougher opposition.
Earlier this week, Klopp was non-committal when asked if Simon Mignolet would return to the side at Anfield this weekend, admitting he faced a dilemma as to which keeper to select.
Now that decision has been taken, ensuring that Karius, signed from Mainz for £4.7million in the summer, will have several weeks to establish himself as undisputed first choice.
Karius's promotion is a huge blow for Mignolet, who has started the season in steady form as Liverpool picked up some important victories.
Despite Mignolet's contributions, it was clear when Karius was signed that the Belgian's position was under threat.
Mignolet joined Liverpool in 2013 and replaced Pepe Reina, but has fought a constant battle to prove he is the long-term solution after years of inconsistency.
His demotion does not signal the end of his Anfield career - the onus is now on Karius to prove himself - but it will be a long way back if his 23-year-old replacement performs well in his place. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
