Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has offered up an upbeat report on his fitness after an operation on his injured knee

Alongside a picture of him in a hospital bed, Oxlade-Chamberlain wrote on Twitter: "Watching the boys in Rome last week taking us one step closer to something very special.

"Knee surgery was a success and the hard work has already begun."

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has expressed his dismay at Oxlade-Chamberlain's injury, as he offered up these words to the star he signed from Arsenal last summer.

"I cannot believe that this wonderful player and person in such a positive situation helping the team, making such a clear challenge, had this happen to him," stated Klopp.

"It's just a shame. It's not fair to be honest but that's how life is sometimes. They say if you get a lemon make lemonade out of it and that's what we have to do.

"That's what Alex is doing. He's a positive person and he will be back. I've told him already that we will wait for him like a good wife when a man is in prison."

Liverpool meet Real Madrid in Kiev two weeks on Saturday, when they will look to win a sixth European Cup.
