Brendan Rodgers, the Liverpool manager, is preparing to make a shock bid for Javier Hernández, Manchester United's out-of-favour striker, according to a report in Spain.
Despite last week signing Roberto Firmino, the Brazil international, Rodgers will be hoping to add further firepower to his squad with Mario Balotelli, Rickie Lambert and Fabio Borini all expected to leave Anfield this summer.
Hernández, who arrived at Old Trafford in 2010 where he has scored 27 goals in 107 appearances, would appear surplus to requirement under manager Louis van Gaal who sent him out on loan last season.
Despite scoring nine goals in 33 games while at Real Madrid - including the late winner against Atlético Madrid in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final - the Mexican failed to impress at the Santiago Bernabéu and has now returned to United.
However, it would appear the 27-year-old has no future at Old Trafford and, according to AS, the Spanish newsaper, Liverpool are preparing an audacious bid for Hernández.
While it is accepted that Van Gaal will sell Hernández during the summer transfer window, United are unlikely want to sell him to a Premier League rival and would ideally offload him to a foregin club. Juventus and Inter Milan are understood to be interested.
Should Hernández join Liverpool then he would become the first player since Phil Chisnall in 1964 to transfer directly between to bitter north west rivals.
Rodgers's interest in Christian Benteke, the Aston Villa striker, appears not to have waned despite his prohibitively high release clause and is considering offering the club Lambert and Borini in a player-plus-cash deal, accorinding to a report in The Independent.
Another publication claims that Borini, the 24-year-old striker that joined Liverpool for £11m in 2012, will join West Ham United in a deal worth around £8 million. The Italian made just eight league starts for Liverpool.
Finally, Nathaniel Clyne will arrive on Merseyside later today where the England right-back will undergo his medical before completing his move from Southampton, the Liverpool Echo has reported.
After rejecting Liverpool's opening bid iof around £10m, Southampton finally accepted an improved offer of £12.5 and Clyne is now expected to sign a five-year contract once the medical is done.
The 24-year-old will become Rodgers's sixth signing of the summer after James Milner, Danny Ings, Adam Bogdan, Joe Gomez and Roberto Firmino were earlier added to his squad.
