Virgil van Dijk has offered what may be viewed as lukewarm commitment to Southampton, just a few months after he made several high profile attempts to leave the club and join Liverpool last summer.

Dutch defender Van Dijk informed Southampton that he wanted to move to Anfield last May, after he had already staged unsolicited talks with Liverpool over a big-money transfer.

Revelations that the centre-back and his agent had met officials of the Merseyside club without Southampton's position ultimately cost him his dream move, with the south coast club refusing to do business with Liverpool and insisting on an apology from their Premier League rivals for their actions.

Now Van Dijk has given an interview to local Southampton newspaper The Daily Echo, as he hinted he may still look to leave the club in the near future, even though he claimed he was committed to his current employers right now.

"I don't think it's appropriate to comment on anything that happened before," he said, when asked about the events of last summer. "I'm giving 100 per cent for the club, I work hard every day, I help my team-mates and I'm positive and I want to win every game. That's the situation right now. I'm happy and that's the most important thing. We'll see what happens.

"I'm just getting back to pace and I feel like I've been growing every game," he added. You know, coming back from an eight month injury is not easy, but I'm feeling better every week."

Liverpool are widely expected to make a fresh move for Van Dijk in the January transfer window, with Independent.ie reporting throughout last summer that Southampton would not sell the defender ahead of this season after making a decision not to sell their best players ahead of this Premier League season.

We also reported that Southampton may reconsider that position if Van Dijk continued to agitate for a transfer and while he has shown commitment to the club in the last couple of months, there is an expectation that he will look to make a move once more in January.
