Frank Lampard believes Chelsea fans will give him and his young squad time to challenge for trophies.

Chelsea received a standing ovation after Sunday's 2-1 home loss to Liverpool, even though they are yet to win at home this season.

Lampard's team will expect to chalk up their first Stamford Bridge win against League Two's Grimsby Town tonight in the Carabao Cup.

But Lampard believes Chelsea fans have shown they are prepared to be patient, even if it means finishing the season without a trophy.

He said: "I think they are really behind us in terms of where we are at. This is a club with a transfer ban that has lost Eden (Hazard) and two strikers in Alvaro Morata and Gonzalo Higuain.

"Now we have younger players who I think the fans are very ready to be patient with.

"If you show passion and fight and desire to play for the club, as we showed (against Liverpool), then fans will respect that whether you win, lose or draw."

Although he will rotate his squad and bring in the likes of Callum Hudson-Odoi and Reece James, Lampard is not offering his players any excuses not to beat Grimsby.

"It's an opportunity to blood young players in a competition we want to be competitive in," he added. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
