Republic of Ireland international Jonathan Walters inadvertently entered himself as the star of the most eye-catching sports photograph of 2016 during Stoke’s 0-0 draw with Southampton on Wednesday night.

Stoke battled to a point despite being reduced to ten men for much of the game, with Walters making a start for Stoke in a game that featured his Ireland colleague Shane Long on the Saints starting list.

It was not a night to remember for Long as he failed to make his mark in his first Premier League start since September 18th, yet it was this image of Walters that might be the most memorable aspect of the scoreless draw.

We are not sure how Walters nose is bearing up after his brush with the ball at the Britannia Stadium, but it certainly makes for a brilliant piece of photography.
