Irish Movers in January

Glenn Whelan

(2008)

Sheffield Wednesday to Stoke

Whelan was uncapped and plying his trade with a struggling Sheffield Wednesday side in the Championship until his late move to Stoke before the window closed three years ago. Six months later, he was an Irish international on his way to the Premier League.

Keith Fahey

(2009)

St Patrick's Athletic to Birmingham

Technically, this happened at the tail end of 2008, but it wasn't until the turn of the year that Fahey -- one of the top players in the League of Ireland at the time -- could figure. He went straight into the Brum starting XI, and scored a couple of goals that played an important part in their promotion.

Shay Given

(2009)

Newcastle to Manchester City

Maybe it doesn't seem like such a good move now, with the Donegal man trapped behind Joe Hart.

But he needed to escape the black hole that is Newcastle United, and the transfer window deadline forced the hand of the cash-strapped Geordies.
