I sacrificed Chelsea style to get results – Mourinho
Jose Mourinho has revealed that he made a conscious decision this season to put a stop to the new style of football he was trying to introduce at Chelsea and instead focus purely on results.
According to Mourinho, he decided that Chelsea's Champions League place next season would be at risk if he continued with a more "intuitive" philosophy for his players and that he instead went "strategic" in search of silverware.
Mourinho refused to reveal when he made the change but there was a marked difference after Chelsea conceded six goals in two games at the start of December. Since then, Chelsea have kept 19 clean sheets in 32 games.
"I made the decision to stop that evolution in the style and philosophy of play and went in the direction where I felt it was the only way, with this team and these players, we could get results," said Mourinho. "I adapted. I felt this Premier League was so dangerous; that the big risk for every one of the big teams was to be out of the top four."
In what seemed like a dig at Arsenal, Mourinho did stress that he wanted no special praise for a top-four finish. "I don't want to get a bonus for finishing top four, the moment I think like that I'm in trouble," he said. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
