Pep Guardiola was yesterday charged by the English FA for wearing a yellow ribbon in support of Catalan political prisoners on the same day as it emerged that his private plane had twice been searched by Spanish police looking for ousted independence leader Carles Puigdemont.

It is expected that Guardiola will defy the FA by again wearing the ribbon tomorrow.

The FA had twice issued Guardiola with a formal warning to stop wearing the ribbon since he first did so in mid-December.

The 47-year-old refused to comply and the charge has now been brought after he wore it during last Monday's FA Cup defeat against Wigan Athletic.

Guardiola was born in Santpedor, Catalonia, and spent 18 years at Barcelona as both player and manager. He has long been a passionate advocate of the right for Catalans to debate their independence.
