Steven Gerrard is backing Aston Villa to play a pivotal role in tomorrow’s title decider and admitted it would be “fantastic” to help former club Liverpool.

Gerrard is preparing for a final-day showdown with leaders Manchester City and says all the pressure is on Pep Guardiola’s defending champions.

After making 710 appearances as a player for Liverpool, with 472 of them as captain, Gerrard has been receiving messages all week from Merseyside pleading for his Villa team to wreck Guardiola’s title bid. And Villa’s head coach has defended his players over accusations that they have nothing to play for, with his team 14th in the table.

“With Liverpool, I totally understand and respect the external noise and the questions that have been coming my way for some time,” he said. “They’re involved in a title race, and I spent a lot of time there (but) it is disappointing when people mention integrity and aim it towards me or Aston Villa or any of my players.

“We’ll go out at the weekend and give it everything we’ve got to try and get points for Villa and our supporters. If that inevitably helps Liverpool, fantastic, but my priority is to try and get points for Villa.

“City are top of the league for a reason: they’ve got world-class players and a top manager, but there is a lot of pressure on them at the weekend. (© Telegraph Media Group Limited 2022)
