French World Cup hero slams Paul Pogba as "a waste of money"
French World Cup winner Emmanuel Petit believes Manchester United will be “wasting money” if they splash out £100m to sign Paul Pogba from Juventus.
Pogba struggled to catch the eye during France’s run to the Euro 2016 final, with his limp performance in their defeat against Portugal in the final doing little to dilute the criticism flowing the way of the 23-year-old midfielder.
Even though Pogba has proved his worth in the Champions League with Juventus after he was allowed to leave United for nothing in 2012, Petit told Yahoo Sport that the Frenchman has yet to confirm he is good enough to perform at the highest level.
“They say £100m…..it is a waste of money for me,” stated Petit.
“Pogba has a great future, but this move is too early for him. I don’t like the situation around him all the time. We are making him out to be a big star, but he is not a big star to me.
“He hasn’t reached the level of the Champions League yet or the level with the national team. I am pretty sure he can do it, but this is too early for him.
“People talk about him all the time in the press, but I haven’t seen it yet. For the moment, I am not really convinced.
“If Real Madrid wanted this player, they would put the money on the table, but they don’t want to fight with Man Utd for Pogba. There is a reason for that.”
Petit went on to suggest United would be better off spending their £100m on a player whose arrival at Old Trafford may well spark a riot, as he suggested they should sign former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez.
“For £100m, I would buy Suarez from Barcelona,” added Petit.
