Edinson Cavani eyed as replacement for Radamel Falcao at Manchester United
Edinson Cavani could be signed by Manchester United as an alternative to Radamel Falcao, according to reports today.
The Paris St Germain striker has long been linked with a switch to the Premier League and according to the Daily Star he might finally arrive this summer with Manchester United showing interest.
It's claimed that chief executive Ed Woodward travelled to Paris 12 months ago to explore the possibility of luring the Uruguayan to Old Trafford, however no deal materialised. Despite the change in the manager at Manchester United, the club are still interested in the 27-year-old.
Alternative options to Falcao are likely to be linked with a move to Old Trafford amid a disappointing loan spell for the Colombian. Brought in from Monaco amid much fanfare and at a huge cost, the former Atletico Madrid forward has scored just four goals. As well as a poor return for a striker with such a prolific reputation, his presence appears to complicate team selections for Louis van Gaal. The Manchester United manager admitted yesterday that he still doesn't know which is his best formation.
United have an option to buy Falcao at the end of his loan for £43.2m - but that fee looks bigger with every poor performance from the striker. Now 29, there will also be little sell-on value either.
If Manchester United do move for Cavani they will have to turn his head from a return to Italy. According to sources in France the striker is keen on a return to Serie A with Juventus reportedly lining up a bid.
