The Lerner Era
In 1998, Randy Lerner's father, Al, won the rights to the ownership of the Browns. They had spent three years out of the NFL after previous owner Al Modell announced that he was relocating the franchise to Baltimore. After a public outcry, Modell was allowed to move a team to Baltimore but had to relinquish ownership of the Browns history. Under the Lerners, the Browns came back in 1999 but have only made the play-offs once and have only twice won more games than they have lost in a season.
