Chelsea may not get the loan deal for Gonzalo Higuain completed in time for him to play against Tottenham Hotspur in the second leg of their League Cup semi-final tomorrow night.

The Argentinian would have to sign by midday today in order to be eligible and, while the deal moved a step closer yesterday when AC Milan completed the €35m transfer of Krzysztof Piate from Genoa, there are still several loose ends to be tied up.

Chelsea's move for Higuain came at Sarri's instigation and is the kind of expensive deal that the club would usually avoid - it will cost them an initial €11m in loan fees and wages.

It is expected that Higuain's loan deal between Milan and Juventus will be taken over by Chelsea, with an obligation to buy him only if they finish in the top three or win the Europa League.
