Chelsea line up double swoop for strikers Jackson Martinez and Breel Embolo
Chelsea's desperate need for more firepower could lead them to bid for two strikers in the January transfer window.
Reports today suggest that the reigning Premier League champions - who have endured a wretched season - are preparing to spend big this month and have identified their attack as the area which most needs strengthening.
Diego Costa has struggled for form this campaign, and neither Loic Remy or Radamel Falcao have been able to deliver goals regularly to ease the pressure on the Spain international.
Now caretaker manager Guus Hiddink could be ready to bring in new blood, with the odds slashed on Jackson Martinez arriving at Stamford Bridge this month.
The Atletico Madrid striker has been linked with a move to the club before, with the player's agent saying last week: "Jackson wants to succeed at Atletico, but it’s the club who will decide his future. I can’t say [Chelsea’s interest] is a lie. This is football and no-one knows what will happen in the future."
It had been suggested that the Spanish club were keen on a swap deal involving their former player Costa, but while Chelsea are unlikely to entertain that prospect, reports in Spain suggest they could tempt them with a straight cash offer for Martinez.
The 29-year-old only moved to Atletico in the summer, but has registered just two goals in 12 La Liga games this season and is rumoured to be unsettled. His contract expires in 2019.
A new name being thrown into the mix for Chelsea, meanwhile, is that of FC Basel striker Breel Embolo.
The 18-year-old has become one of the most coveted young strikers in Europe thanks to his impressive form this season. He has eight goals in 23 games, with Basel valuing him at around £15million, and The Metro have reported that Chelsea are keen on signing him.
Embolo, who can also be deployed on the right side of attack, is contracted to the Swiss club until 2019, but the latter are already resigned to losing him in the coming months.
Moving players out will also be a priority for Chelsea this month, and Falcao could soon be on his way according to reports in La Parisien.
Major League Soccer franchise Columbus Crew SC and Mexican club Club America have both been linked with moves for the Colombian international, who has failed dismally to regain form at Stamford Bridge since joining on loan in the summer.
Falcao is being paid around £140,000 a week by Chelsea, who are desperate to move him off their wage bill.
