Bosingwa errors gift Newcastle vital victory

There will be no repeat of the trauma of four years ago for Newcastle United. This away victory moves them up to 41 points and guarantees Premier League safety.

Newcastle could not have hoped for more hospitable opponents than Queens Park Rangers as they recorded only their second away league win of the season.

QPR made Newcastle look like a model of cohesion and spirit yet the hosts did start briskly and even went ahead through Loic Remy's penalty, after Junior Hoilett was pulled back by Mathieu Debuchy.

But, from then on, they were abject and gave away two goals from Jose Bosingwa errors, with the defender subjected to relentless abuse from the stands..

For Newcastle's equaliser, he pulled back Hatem Ben Arfa and referee Lee Probert gave his second penalty of the day. Ben Arfa's spot-kick found the top corner.

That was bad, but Newcastle's second, on 34 minutes, was worse. Bosingwa underhit a backpass to Rob Green, Jonas Gutierrez charged down the kick and Yoan Gouffran fired the ball into an empty net.

It took the dismissal of Rob Elliot for handball outside the box – his second yellow card – with nine minutes remaining for QPR to have any meaningful pressure.

Steve Harper came on in goal, but did not have too much to do. Newcastle were only playing against their nerves, but won out and now they can finally relax.
