Barton stripped of QPR armband
Queens Park Rangers yesterday stripped Joey Barton of the captaincy and fined him six weeks' wages for his violent conduct against Manchester City on the final day of last season.
Last month, Barton was banned for 12 matches by the English FA and fined £75,000 for elbowing Carlos Tevez, kicking Sergio Aguero and trying to head-butt Vincent Kompany.
"The club has also reached agreement with Barton that if he seriously breaches the club's disciplinary procedures again, the club reserves the right to terminate his contract," QPR said.
Barton was contrite about his actions during a match in which his team only narrowly avoided relegation. "I was reckless and deserved every punishment I received," he said on Twitter.
Elsewhere, Montpellier president Louis Nicollin claims Arsenal have completed the signing of France international Olivier Giroud. The striker is thought to command a transfer fee in the region of £13m.
The 25-year-old scored 25 goals for his club last season to help them win the Ligue 1 title, igniting the interest of several top clubs.
Danny Murphy, meanwhile, has joined Blackburn on a two-year contract after being released by Fulham.
