Thierry Henry gives his verdict on the Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez contract sagas
Arsenal legend Thierry Henry has urged his former club to do all they can to keep Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez, after insisting the star duo ‘have to stay’ if the Gunners are to challenge for the top honours in the game.
Ozil and Sanchez have contracts that run until the summer of 2018 at Arsenal, but manager Arsene Wenger admits the club is struggling to meet the financial demands of the duo as they look to extend those deals.
The future of Ozil and Sanchez has dominated the Arsenal news agenda in recent weeks, with Henry adding fuel to the fire with these comments to Sky Sports.
“Is it going to be a blow if they leave? Yes, it’s going to be massive, but the club is not going to die just because they leave. Having said that, they have to stay,” declared Arsenal’s all-time record goal scorer.
“If you want to build a future, they are the future of the club. You want to build a team around those guys.
“Mesut Ozil has been there for a little while, Alexis Sanchez arrived after but when you have more than just a chance to win it (the title) if they are there.
“Arsenal will always be Arsenal. It was in our time and always will be, but you want have those guys around to win the title.”
Henry also believes the injury to key defender Shkodran Mustafi is a major blow, with the German set to miss the rest of 2016 with a hamstring injury.
“What Mustafi has brought to the club is stability,” added Henry. “Laurent Koscielny was looking for a partner and we all know how important it is to get a guy you are going to get used to playing with.
“Arsene used to change it a lot before but now it looks like he’s finally found someone to play alongside Koscielny.
“What’s going to be massive for Arsenal is the games against Everton, Man City and the games coming right now. We all know how difficult it is in that period and you need to have all your leaders on the field. We have seen he is a leader for Arsenal.”
