In a bizarre twist, Mezut Ozil has offered to pay the full salary of Jerry Quy, the Arsenal employee who doubles up as club mascot Gunnersaurus, after learning that he had been made redundant.
Quy, who has worn the dinosaur suit for 27 years, has been let go as a result of Arsenal's cost-cutting measures this summer.
Quy has been made redundant from his other roles at the club, which include working within the supporter liaison department, but a conclusion has not yet been reached on how that might affect his position as Gunnersaurus.
Ozil, who hasn't played for the Gunners since March, posted on Instagram yesterday that he was willing to pay Quy's full wages for as long as he remains an Arsenal player.
"I'm offering to reimburse Arsenal with the full salary of our big green guy as long as I will be an Arsenal player so Jerry can continue his job that he loves so much."
Ozil is Arsenal's highest-earner, with his £350,000-per-week (€385,000) contract expiring at the end of this season. An Arsenal spokesperson said: "Gunnersaurus is not extinct and will return to action when fans are allowed back at matches."
