Pep Guardiola coup by Manchester City dominates Twitter on transfer deadline day
Pep Guardiola dominated the sporting agenda on transfer deadline day, with his move to Manchester City getting 10 times as many Twitter mentions as the most-discussed deal of the day.
Interest in the Catalan's decision to sign a three-year contract and join the Blues in the summer also meant City were the most mentioned Premier League team on deadline day - ahead of local rivals Manchester United, Newcastle, Arsenal and Chelsea according to figures released to Press Association Sport by Twitter.
Giannelli Imbula's move from Porto to Stoke generated the most Twitter mentions of the completed deals, but paled into insignificance at the side of tweets talking about Guardiola's switch to the Etihad Stadium.
On a subdued deadline day, Seydou Doumbia's loan move from Roma to Newcastle was the second most talked-about done deal, ahead of Mathieu Debuchy (Arsenal to Bordeaux on loan), Oumar Niasse (Lokomotiv Moscow to Everton) and Steven Fletcher (Sunderland to Marseille on loan).
Newcastle's interest in West Brom striker Saido Berahino was the most discussed of the rumoured transfer deals that ultimately did not happen, with the midlands club holding on to their man despite a reported £21million bid.
Alex Teixeira, who Shakhtar Donetsk told Liverpool would cost £53million, was the second-highest rumoured deal in terms of Twitter mentions, followed by Jose Enrique (Liverpool to Newcastle), Loic Remy (Chelsea to Newcastle or Leicester) and Radamel Falcao (Chelsea to Atletico Madrid).
