Patterson strike fires Derry to quarters
Sligo Rovers 0 Derry City 1
EA Sports Cup specialists Derry City advanced to the quarter-finals after defeating Sligo Rovers at the Showgrounds.
Rory Patterson's first-half strike was enough to see the 10-time winners overcome the Bit O'Red for the second time this season.
Patterson worked a neat one-two with Barry McNamee on 14 minutes after getting in behind Gary Boylan, and he finished well for the only goal of the game.
Derry striker Nathan Boyle twice put Rovers 'keeper Richard Brush under pressure in the first half, while Sean Maguire went closest at the other end with a strike just over the top from the edge of the box.
Roddy Collins Jnr and substitute John-Paul McGovern tried their luck from distance in the second half, as Rovers were forced to replace the injured Brush with Gary Rogers.
Maguire went close to levelling it at the death when he was picked out by debutant Regan Donelon, but he could not keep his header down and Derry's unbeaten run was extended to six games.
