Joey Barton's Fleetwood Town are set to battle fellow English League One club Bristol Rovers for UCD centre-back Liam Scales.

Rovers, managed by Irishman Graham Coughlan, are favourites to land the Ireland U-21 international but interest from others, including Fleetwood, has delayed any immediate move.

And another highly-rated League of Ireland cadet, Bohemians defender Andy Lyons, is fancied by Wimbledon.

Lyons has just completed his Leaving Certificate and will travel to Armenia as part of Ireland's U-19 Euro finals squad.

In other news, Fulham are expected to wrap up a deal for Shamrock Rovers teenager James Furlong. Brighton and Hove Albion were also in the running for his signature but the Ireland U-17 defender is destined for Craven Cottage following talks this week.

His international team-mate, former Rovers goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu, yesterday signed his first professional contract, a four-year deal with Manchester City.

The stopper moved cross-channel in February to commence full-time training in an arrangement that allowed him study for his Leaving Certificate.

A move by rival Aro Muric paves the way for Bazunu to assume the No1 spot in City's U-23 team next term where he will be joined by fellow Dubliner Tyreke Wilson.
