Cristiano Ronaldo netted a first-half penalty as injury-depleted Real Madrid recovered from their derby defeat by Atletico Madrid with a 3-1 win at Levante last night.

An own goal by keeper Diego Marino and a stoppage-time strike by Isco ensured Real kept a firm grip on third place in La Liga, nine points behind Barcelona, who play Rayo Vallecano tonight. Gary Neville's Valencia came from behind to beat Malaga 2-1 and jump up to ninth place.

Bayern Munich suffered their first defeat in three months with a shock 2-1 loss to Mainz, which allowed Borussia Dortmund cut the gap at the top of the Bundesliga to five points. Jhon Cordoba scored a winner for the visitors in the 86th minute.

Juventus survived a major Coppa Italia scare before beating Inter Milan 5-3 on penalties. Juve won the semi-final first leg 3-0 in January but lost the second leg by the same scoreline.
