Paul Scholes has emerged as a surprise candidate to take over at Oldham Athletic, after being interviewed for the vacant manager's position.

Scholes' only previous managerial experience is as caretaker manager of Salford, a position he briefly held with Phil Neville in 2015.

Oldham have been without a manager since John Sheridan left in September, with the club bottom of League One.

They have since won all three matches under interim manager Richie Wellens, and are now 19th in the table.

Scholes has worked as a pundit with BT Sport since retiring as a player.
