They had to survive another VAR shambles, snow and a spirited Rochdale display but, in the end, a second-half blitz in the blizzard was enough for Tottenham at Wembley.

The chaos started after just six minutes as Eric Lamela's goal was given, then disallowed by VAR after a foul by Fernando Llorente.

Heung-Min Son then managed to open the scoring without controversy but, minutes later, VAR was again consulted and a free-kick decision was changed to a penalty. Son converted but stuttered in his run up resulting in a free-kick to Rochdale, no goal and a yellow card for Son. If this wasn't enough, Rochdale then equalised through Steve Humphrys .

If the first half was farcical, the second was decidedly formulaic as Llorente hit a 12 minute hat-trick and Son added his second. Kyle Walker-Peters added the sixth in the final minute of injury time. All of which, thankfully for the confused, cold and increasingly irritable home support, were allowed to stand by the VAR.
