Lionel Messi has signed a new contract with Barcelona up to the end of the 2020/21 season, with a buyout clause set at €700m.

The Catalan club have moved to tie up their prized asset after PSG swooped last summer to sign Neymar in a world record deal. Messi, 30, will be 34 by the time the new deal ends, which will bring him up to 17 seasons with the Barcelona first team.

Barcelona have won eight La Liga titles and four Champions Leagues since Messi made his debut in 2004, and look on course to add at least another league crown this season after opening up a four-point advantage at the top of the table - and a ten-point lead over rivals Real Madrid.

Messi has started this campaign in blistering form too, netting 12 times in 12 league encounters en route to 16 goals in 19 games overall.
