Ex-Man United centre back Jaap Stam will be appointed as the new Reading manager this afternoon, according to reports.

The former Dutch international, who won the Champions League with United in 1999, has never been a manager of a professional team but Sky Sports are reporting that he will take on the top job at the Championship club.

Stam does have some coaching experience, however, after stints as an assistant with Ajax and FC Zwolle.

Signed from PSV by Alex Ferguson in 1998, the defender won a Premier League medal in each of his three seasons at the club before being controversially sold to Lazio in 2001 after a falling out with his manager.

He subsequently joined AC Milan from Lazio before one final season with Ajax, after which he retired from football in 2007.
