Some of the biggest names in football have paid tribute to Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard after his emotional Anfield send-off yesterday.

The 34-year-old's final appearance at the ground before his summer move to the Los Angeles Galaxy ended in a disappointing 3-1 defeat to Crystal Palace, but a full house remained to honour the long-serving midfielder.

Former team-mates and opponents took to social media to leave their own messages for the decorated Liverpool legend.

"Thank you, legend for all you made me live in Anfield and for all the joy you have given to the football world," Barcelona forward Luis Suarez posted on his Twitter account. "Thank you my friend for everything. You are truly one of the greatest!"

World Cup winner Alessandro Nesta also led praise for one of his "toughest opponents".
