Republic of Ireland captain Robbie Keane was given a rapturous response this evening as LA Galaxy defeated Shamrock Rovers 1-0 in Tallaght.

Ireland's record goal scorer was replaced with a minute to play in the pre-season encounter and the Tallaght Stadium and the 6,000 supporters present were keen to show their appreciation for the former Liverpool and Tottenham striker.

The Dubliner failed to get on the scoresheet with chances at a premium throughout.

On the stroke of half-time Mika Vayrynen grabbed what turned out to be the only score of the game.

The MLS side enjoyed the lion's share of possession and the Finnish trialist saw his shot take a deflection off Rovers defender Max Blanchard for what turned out to be the winning goal.

The biggest cheer of the evening was reserved for the local hero when Galaxy coach Bruce Arena substituted Keane with a minute to go.

Keane's nieces and nephews, along with his son Robert, posed for a photograph prior to kick-off.
