A towering Dean Jarvis header booked Dundalk's place in the quarter-finals of the EA Sports Cup as St Patrick's Athletic's woes continued at Richmond Park as they suffered a fourth successive defeat.

Both sides rang the changes from their league games last Friday; St Pat's making six switches while Daniel Cleary was the only starter for Dundalk who began their win over Cork City.

It took Dundalk just five minutes to punish a defensive error for the lead.

Dave Webster lost possession to allow Georgie Kelly a free run on goal. And though goalkeeper Barry Murphy deflected the shot into the air, he couldn't prevent the dropping ball from entering the net.

As the rain cascaded down, St Pat's levelled on 13 minutes. James Doona's speculative shot deflected off defender Dylan Hand to beat Aaron McCarey at his near post.

But further negligent defending by St Pat's allowed Dundalk to regain the lead on 34 minutes for what would prove the winner.

Jordan Flores floated a corner from the Camac side for Jarvis to rise above the home defence and power a header to the net.

Substitute Daniel Kelly was then inches from adding to Dundalk's lead on 71 minutes. Played cleverly through by the impressive Flores, Kelly's low shot beat Murphy only to come back off the butt of a post.

The home side rallied late on with substitute Mikey Drennan not too far wide with an 89th-minute free-kick as Dundalk held out.
