Two Irish footballers pictured urinating into a pint glass at the Cheltenham Festival and then emptying it over a balcony have apologised for their actions.

MK Dons FC midfielder Samir Carruthers (22) and Northampton Town player James Collins (25) - who both represented the Republic of Ireland at underage level - said their actions "embarrassed everyone".

Their group has been banned from attending the rest of the festival.

"I just want to say I'm sorry to everyone, my family, the club, the chairman, everyone," Mr Carruthers (inset top) told Sky Sports News.

"I wasn't raised up to do that and I've let everyone down. I have to take the criticism that comes with it... It's not an example that should be given to kids."

MK Dons has begun an internal investigation while Shrewsbury striker Mr Collins (inset bottom), on loan at Northampton, has been fined the maximum two weeks' wages.

"I cannot apologise enough for my actions and the pictures from my visit to Cheltenham Races," he said. "I have completely let myself, my family, the fans, and the two clubs I represent down and I am sorry to everyone involved."
