Ireland U21 star continues to push for senior cap after making Eredivisie team of the week
He might not be playing for one of Europe's most glamorous clubs but Dubliner Jack Byrne is still progressing very nicely in his first full season of senior football.
The U21 international, who is on the books at Manchester City, has been enjoying a stellar year in the Dutch league with Cambuur, and with each passing performance it becomes a question of when Martin O'Neill will call him into the senior squad rather than if.
The prospect of him appearing at Euro 2016 appears remote but the last few weeks have seen Byrne grow more comfortable in his central midfield role.
Late last month he notched his first home goal in a 1-0 win over Zwolle with a sumptuous sweep to the net and he appears to have kicked on further since.
Cambuur, who are second from bottom despite Byrne's promising displays, were beaten 3-1 away to Feyenoord last Sunday. However, the 19-year-old's performance caught the eye of Dutch football website Betweters, who named him in their team of the week, something that Byrne was proud of.
If Byrne continues to develop his goal-scoring ability from midfield, it will be interesting to see if Pep Guardiola has any use for him next season at the Ethiad. Byrne's highly accurate passing seems a natural fit for the Spaniard's system.
