Fowler makes O'Donovan his first signing in Aussie A-League
Roy O'Donovan will be working with Robbie Fowler for the next two seasons after the Liverpool legend made the Irish striker his first signing at Brisbane Roar.
Fowler is starting his managerial journey Down Under after accepting an offer to manage in the A-League.
And he has turned to former Cork City and Sunderland attacker O'Donovan in a bid to find a front man that knows the league well. O'Donovan (33) has established himself in Australia through productive stints at Central Coast Mariners and Newcastle Jets. He has departed the latter to join Brisbane.
The ex-Coventry trainee was brought to Sunderland by Roy Keane in 2007 after a prolific spell with Cork City.
He did make a number of Premier League appearances for the club, but failed to nail down a regular starting spot and then played for seven different clubs across England and Scotland before packing his bags for new adventures in 2014.
O'Donovan spent time in Brunei and Indonesia before moving on to Australia where he has since made his home. Fowler's star quality helped to attract him to Brisbane.
"It's an exciting time to be joining the club and the chance to work with Premier League legend Robbie Fowler was a big factor in my decision," he said.
Fowler said: "I'm very happy that we have secured Roy for the next two seasons. Getting a quality striker with a proven track record in the A-League was a key position for us to fill. I was impressed with what I've seen of Roy so far and genuinely feel that there is plenty more to come from him.
"I look forward to his contribution as a goal scorer and as an experienced member of the squad."
Meanwhile, Shamrock Rovers have confirmed that they will be making a submission to the FAI with a view to entering a team in the Women's National League.
The Hoops withdrew from the league in 2014, but are making inroads in that department again, kicking off with an U-17 side with a view to regaining senior status.
Their partnership with Lucan United will be central to the plan.
