Ireland made an impressive start to their UEFA U-17 Championships elite qualifying round with an emphatic win over Faroe Islands in Paphos.

Brighton's Aaron Connolly bagged two first-half goals, with Adam Idah and Jordan Doherty both scoring early in the second half to seal victory.

Slovakia beat hosts Cyprus 2-1 in the other Group 8 match. Ireland meet Slovakia today.

Connolly opened the scoring in the ninth minute when he got on to an excellent long pass from Nathan Collins on the left flank and cut in on to his right foot to score with an excellent finish.

The Galway native struck again in the 23rd minute when he headed home a Lee O'Connor cross after good work in the build-up by Glen McAuley.

College Corinthians striker Adam Idah made it 3-0 one minute into the second half when he connected with a sublime pass by Rowan Roache.

Two minutes later, Doherty grabbed the fourth following a neat corner-kick routine involving Roache and Idah.

"I'm very pleased with our start. We had a very positive approach and were the dominant side from the start. It was a very professional performance," said coach Colin O'Brien.
