Commons restores pride
Fenerbahce 1-1 Celtic
A Kris Commons equaliser helped Celtic regain some pride in their doomed Europa League campaign against Fenerbahce last night but they were scarred by another self-inflicted wound once again in a hard-fought draw.
Celtic had travelled to Turkey for the first time guaranteed to finish bottom of Group A after taking just two points from five fixtures.
The Scottish champions had held their own in the first half with striker Nadir Ciftci missing a good chance but an error in the 39th minute by keeper Craig Gordon allowed winger Lazar Markovic to score. The keeper raced from his goal to cut out a hopeful pass from Gokhan Gonul to Markovic and inexplicably let the ball go through his legs, with the Fenerbahce winger, on loan from Liverpool, sliding in from a tight angle.
This game changed in the 67th minute when Fenerbahce's Diego, booked in the first half for an altercation with Stefan Johansen, was sent off for a kick at the Norwegian. Moments after replacing Scott Allan on 73 minutes, Commons headed in a Mikael Lustig cross for a point but Fenerbahce still progressed.
