Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago is set for an extended spell on the sidelines after tearing a thigh muscle in Wednesday's Champions League win away to Anderlecht.

Bayern said in a statement the 26-year-old Spain international would be out for a "long time" after a "thorough investigation" revealed the extent of the injury.

Thiago was forced off just before half-time in his side's 2-1 win in Brussels.

Thiago joined Bayern from Barcelona in 2013 as one of then boss Pep Guardiola's first signings and has established himself as a key member of the squad after an knee ligament injury in his first season ruled him out for more than a year.
