O'Hanlon puts seal on Longford victory
Goals in each half from Daniel Purdy and substitute Josh O'Hanlon secured Longford's comfortable progression to the second round at a bitterly cold Lissywoollen Stadium in Athlone.
Tony Cousins' men were vastly superior to Roddy Collins' young team and Longford never looked like conceding a goal to the home side.
The Athlone back four held firm for the first quarter but Longford made their decisive breakthrough in the 23rd minute when striker Michael Isichei made a driving run at the heart of the defence.
Isichei beat two defenders before losing control, but the ball broke to the right side of the penalty area where Purdy was on hand to finish off a sweeping move.
Longford's victory was made secure with 17 minutes left when O'Hanlon gratefully took advantage of an uncharacteristic error in the heart of the Athlone backline.
A long clearance from 'keeper Chris Bennion evaded both centre-halves and O'Hanlon just had to poke the ball past the advancing Craig Sexton to double Longford's lead.
