Oh mama! More drama for Italians ...

HOWEVER much Italian football authorities try to clear up the game's image there, some unforeseen moment of madness is always lurking around the corner.

That was the case last Nove-mber when 16 players from Italian amateur side San Luca wore black armbands at a game as a show of respect following the death of a popular local chap, named Antonio Pelle.

However, it turned out that Pelle actually earned a living as a Mafia boss and when news broke of the gesture there was uproar among the footballing authorities. An investigation was launched and now San Luca, who play in Italy's eighth tier, have been docked three points and fined e600. The players had apparently worn the armbands as boss Pelle was related to a club member.
