Ireland international Michael Obafemi marked his return from injury by claiming an assist for Southampton in their derby win over Portsmouth in the League Cup last night.

The Dublin-born forward had enjoyed a good start to the season with the Saints, scoring the winner in the last round but was then sidelined by injury.

Boss Ralph Hasenhuttl put Obafemi into his starting XI away to Pompey last night, Shane Long on the bench, and Obafemi responded with a good display.

Danny Ings put the Saints 1-0 up after 21 minutes and Obafemi provided the pass for Ings' second, with further goals from Cédric Soares and Nathan Redmond.

Long came on for the last seven minutes of the win, a blow for the Tipperary man not to start as he was told by Mick McCarthy that he needed first-team action before he can win back his place in the Ireland squad.

Difficult

Elsewhere, Preston found the step-up against Manchester City too difficult, Sean Maguire rested as they lost 3-0 to the Premier League champions.

Danny Welbeck scored his first goal for Watford as they avoided a second humiliation in four days.

The Hornets, still smarting from their 8-0 mauling at City on Saturday, edged past Championship side Swansea 2-1.

Welbeck headed in the opener and had a hand in Roberto Pereyra's winner after Swansea threatened an upset when Sam Surridge equalised.

They held on for a first win for Hornets boss Quique Sanchez Flores since he returned for a second spell in charge.

Leicester City had no problems away to Luton Town, winning 4-0 with goals from Demarai Gray, James Justin, Youri Tielemans and Kelechi Iheanacho.

Everton won 2-0 away to Sheffield Wednesday, and Arsenal breezed past Nottingham Forest, a Gabriel Martinelli brace and efforts from Rob Holding, Joe Willock and Reiss Nelson getting them over the line with ease.
