Mulhall pounces to snatch deserved point for Students

In recent weeks Galway United and UCD have earned praise for their gritty defensive play, but last night's Terryland Park encounter was sprinkled with pacy, attacking football.

It was the Students who made the livelier start, and they were rewarded in the fourth minute as David McMillan edged them ahead after Barry Ryan had saved Ciaran Kilduff's initial effort.

Galway, though, gradually became competitive, crafting a string of opportunities before restoring parity in the 19th minute when Anto Flood flicked Rhys Meynell's deep cross past Billy Brennan.

Galway hit the front in the 36th minute as Flood's sharp turn in the box forced Evan McMillan to handle the ball, and Stephen O'Donnell's penalty was precise.

Then, on the stroke of half-time, Ryan hesitated when the ball was passed back and Chris Mulhall reacted sharply to dispossess the goalkeeper and draw the students level.

Opportunities were crafted after the restart and Ryan had to be alert to deny David McMillan during a frenetic third quarter.
