Matt Doherty and Harry Kane have paid tribute to Spurs fitness coach Gian Piero Ventrone after the Italian lost has battle with fulminant leukaemia at the age of 62.

The Italian was one of Antonio Conte right hand men and joined Tottenham in November 2021.

Tottenham tweeted: "We are devastated to announce that fitness coach Gian Piero Ventrone has passed away. He will be greatly missed by everyone at the club and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this impossibly sad time."

La Republicca said that Ventrone, who was nicknamed 'The Marine' due to his training methods, passed away in Naples overnight.

Doherty called Ventrone an 'amazing man' while Kane praised his 'words and wisdom'.

"A truly remarkable man. I’m devastated by the passing of our coach Gian Piero. My love and strength is with his family at this time.

"His words and wisdom will live on with me for the rest of my life and I’m just grateful I had the opportunity to spend time with him. RIP Prof."

Ventrone’s fitness sessions were so tough they caused players to throw up.

“That's pretty normal. Even the week before in London was along those lines,” Ireland right-back Matt Doherty said in the summer.

“I don't know if there will be any teams fitter than us. This is hard, the hardest pre-season I've had. It's not like anything I've done before. But you get a great satisfaction once the session is over.

“Your mind has been tortured in the middle of it but when it's done you feel proud and you go to bed thinking, ‘Yeah, I've worked hard today’. You're just thinking, ‘Don't quit’. Even if you crawl over the line or you have to jog or walk towards the end.

“It's that determination the manager has instilled in us to keep going and never quit.”
