Martinez joy as Barca 'diamond' Deulofeu signs up for season
Everton's Spanish revolution has continued with the loan signing of Barcelona's Gerard Deulofeu.
Manager Roberto Martinez was the prime influence in luring the highly rated teenager to Goodison Park as a host of European clubs were also interested in the forward.
Deulofeu, a member of the Spanish U-20 squad, will remain on Merseyside for the forthcoming season. Although his opportunities are limited at the Nou Camp at the moment, he is seen as a potential first-team player in the future.
That makes his capture, albeit temporary, quite a coup for Martinez, who is moulding a side with his own distinctive, attacking stamp.
Martinez said: "Gerard is a real diamond of Spanish football and a boy with incredible footballing talent, and I am delighted that he has chosen to take the next step of his career with Everton."
The new Toffees coach is acting on his promise to add flair to the well-established solidity in the Goodison ranks. He has signed Arouna Kone and Antolin Alcarez, his former Wigan Athletic players, and goalkeeper Joel Robles, who was also on loan at the DW Stadium last season.
As well as signing new players, however, Martinez still faces a challenge to resist bids for his prized assets. Manchester United will not give up on their pursuit of Leighton Baines and Marouane Fellaini's future also remains uncertain given he can leave if a bid of £23m is received.
