Marcel Brands hoping to form successful partnership with Marco Silva at Everton
Steve Walsh and Ronald Koeman were director of football and manager at the start of last season.
Everton’s director of football Marcel Brands is confident his working relationship with new manager Marco Silva will be successful.
The club have replaced their top two footballing personnel after last summer’s £150million spend under former boss Ronald Koeman and director of football Steve Walsh flopped badly.
Everton have decided the people not the system was at fault and so have invested heavily in Silva and Brands to try to ensure the same mistakes are not repeated.
And Brands, who officially arrived from PSV Eindhoven last week, believes between them they can make it work.
“We do it together because there is no sense I try to get a player for Everton and the coach is not willing (to play) that player,” said Brands.
“I worked with a lot of good coaches – Louis van Gaal, Ronald Koeman, Phillip Cocu – and I never had one player that we didn’t both agree on so that is what I will do with Marco.”
Brands will try to get things moving as soon as possible now Silva is in position but knows there will have to be more outgoings than incomings because the squad is top heavy.
The difficulty is most of the players do not return for pre-season until the first week of July.
“I think the most important thing now is to look at our own squad. We have 38 players and that is difficult to work for a coach so we have to change that,” he added.
“We have several players on loan and the squad is too big, that is clear.
“From the other side we have to fill in a few targets that we think we need. We think there are maybe a few positions where we look for targets.
“We have a shorter time than normal because the transfer market will close earlier and we have the World Cup so it will be a very busy time.
“When I started Friday, agents were calling all day about new players and about our players.
“I think the most important thing now is to sit with Marco and produce our own plans to do everything so by the beginning of August everything which has to be done is done but it will be difficult.”
