Manchester United won't let Lyon's 'top priority' Memphis Depay go on the cheap
Memphis Depay is Lyon's "number one priority" this month, but Jose Mourinho says the Manchester United winger will be staying unless they come up with a reasonable offer.
The 22-year-old arrived from PSV Eindhoven to much fanfare in the summer of 2015, but an underwhelming first season at the club has been followed by a disappointing second campaign.
Depay, a £25million acquisition, has made just one start in all competitions since Mourinho's arrival and Lyon have emerged as a leading candidate for the United winger's signature.
Talks have begun between the clubs and coach Bruno Genesio confirmed that the French club are keen to bring the Holland international to the Parc Olympique Lyonnais.
"Things are progressing, we keep on working," Genesio was quoted as saying on www.olweb.fr when asked about this month's transfer plans.
"It takes time, discussions...because recruiting a player now is not easy. I trust the president to get things done quickly.
"I have put a priority on Memphis Depay.
"He is a powerful player who scores goals and is good at set-pieces. Rachid (Ghezzal) has left for the African Nations Cup and Memphis knows how to play out wide.
"He is a young player with great international experience and a lot of potential. This is my number one priority.
"I'm a fan of this player, he has an interesting profile for us, especially as we risk losing Rachid at the end of the season.
"But there are several things to consider, including the price."
United boss Mourinho has confirmed that the fee for Depay is a sticking point - one which the Red Devils will not waver on, even if it means he remains at Old Trafford.
"The update is that the offer we had is far from being reasonable for us," he said.
"So in this moment, he is our player and if in the end of the month nothing happens, he is one more option for us"
Morgan Schneiderlin left United for Everton on Thursday, moving for an initial £20million fee that is expected to reach £24million due to add-ons.
