Man United told they will have the break world record fee to sign €140m Gareth Bale - reports

Manager Louis van Gaal has been busy this summer in recruiting Memphis Depay, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Matteo Darmian and Morgan Schneiderlin, but admitted to reporters last week that a "surprise" transfer is still on the cards.

The Sunday People says that a move for long-term target Bale is on the cards, with the former Spurs player open to a move back to England.

Bale moved for £85m two summers ago and won the Champions League in his first season, as well as the match-winning goal in the Copa del Rey Final against Barcelona.

Last season he struggled with form and injury and while president Florentino Perez is adamant the player is going nowhere, representatives on both sides are believed to have remained in contact over a possible switch.

The paper says the club now value Bale at £95m (€140m), with any deal likely to include David De Gea going in the opposite direction. The goalkeeper has just a year left on his current deal, but club sources say the Red Devils are holding out for a fee in the region of €40m as the La Liga giants look to prize the Spanish international away.

The 27-year-old was granted an extended break due to his Copa America participation and is due back at the Mestalla on Monday, but it is believed Louis van Gaal will step up his interest, especially with Jonny Evans expected to leave United before the season gets underway.
