One lucky South Dublin punter has won almost €250,000 after an “outrageously ambitious” football accumulator.

It’s a cracking start to the year for the man, who wants to keep his identity private, after he won a mind-blowing €246,342 on a 17-leg accumulator from a €10 bet.

The punter’s bet defied odds of 25,000/1 and included matches in England, Italy, Spain, Greece, France, Mexico, Qatar and even friendly matches in Germany and France.

As to be expected, there was a huge element of luck in the winning bet, which a spokesperson for Paddy Power said was “well, well up there” with the highest rewarding football bets they had ever seen.

One game included in the bet was the Serie A match in Italy between Cagliari and AC Milan. An 89th-minute strike from Carlos Bacca secured Milan all three points, sending the  punter on a path to fortune.

Inter Milan had to come from 1-0 behind away to Udinese to win 2-1, with the winner coming in the 87th minute. Similarly, in France, Clermont Foot were holding Bordeaux until the 87th minute, when Malcom scored to keep the miraculous punt alive.

Feilim Mac An Iomaire, a spokesman for Paddy Power, said: “It’s especially amazing, considering  he has games from the Portuguese smaller leagues and even Qatar.

“Seventeen legs across over half a dozen countries is outrageously ambitious and we’re only too happy to congratulate him on his winnings.

“It’s not every day that you land a 25,000/1 shot, but he’ll have felt as though he’s earned it after having to endure several nail-biting finishes,” he added.

Although the bet comes short of the maximum  payout on a football accumulator of €1m, the huge win is the highestentry into Paddy Power’s hall of fame.

Mr Mac An Iomaire said “it far surpasses anything from 2016”.

“I think the fact that it was a €10 bet really is the amazing thing, because most people only put €1 or something small and hope for the best, but this was just outrageous,” he added.
