Long leads Avondale to glory

Avondale Utd 4 Bluebell Utd 1 FAI Intermediate cup final

AVONDALE made it a hat-trick of triumphs in this competition as they recovered from an early setback to stamp their class on the final.

The Cork club are unbeaten across four competitions this season and went into the game without having conceded a goal on their way to the showdown at Richmond Park.

However, they were rocked in the opening minute as the Dubliners took the lead through Robert Douglas.

The outsiders, however, failed to hold onto their advantage for long as Roy Long headed in the equaliser after a cross from Ian Stapleton after just seven minutes.

Five minutes later, the momentum shifted irreparably when Long doubled his and his team's tally with another header.

Bluebell – with former Shamrock Rovers striker Trevor Molloy pulling the strings – pushed for an equaliser but their hopes were ended when Stapleton converted a penalty with nine minutes left before Kevin Mulcahy sealed a superb three-in-a-row achievement.
