Leicester v Sunderland - Story of the match

Leicester piled the misery on David Moyes with a gritty 2-0 win to push Sunderland closer to relegation.

Islam Slimani and Jamie Vardy scored to virtually guarantee the champions' own Premier League survival and cap a few days to forget for Black Cats boss Moyes.

The Scot's ill-advised comments to a BBC reporter last month had left him facing a Football Association charge, but he is also now staring at relegation with Sunderland.

"If the season ended in June Leicester would win it" - Gary Lineker is enjoying Leicester's revival.

The game never looked like coming alive before the introduction of Marc Albrighton and Slimani. The pair had only been on the pitch eight minutes before they combined for Slimani to open the scoring. The Algeria striker nodded in Albrighton's pin-point cross to set Leicester up for victory with his first club goal this year. Albrighton was then on hand to tee up Vardy to make the game safe nine minutes later to give the scoreline a slightly lop-sided look.

Leicester have never lost a Premier League home match against Sunderland, winning five and drawing two of their seven meetings. The Foxes beat the Black Cats 4-2 in the opening game of their stunning title-winning campaign last season and never looked back in 2015-16. This season they faced a more combative Sunderland - who still looked destined for the drop - and had to wait before finally grabbing the win.

STAR MAN: Marc Albrighton

The winger was only on the pitch for 28 minutes, but conjured two goals to settle a game which had looked destined to finish 0-0. First he set-up fellow substitute Slimani to open the scoring after 69 minutes before teeing up Vardy to settle the game nine minutes later. He missed Saturday's 2-0 win over Stoke through illness but returned off the bench to underline his importance to the side.
