Leeds sign up Paul Green
THERE was good news for one member of Ireland's Euro 2012 squad yesterday, as Paul Green secured a move to Leeds United, WRITES DANIEL McDONNELL.
A late call-up to Giovanni Trapattoni's panel after Keith Fahey suffered an injury, Green made a brief substitute appearance in the thrashing by Spain.
He was available on a free transfer after refusing the offer of a new contract and leaving Derby County at the end of the season.
Leeds' interest was flagged before the tournament and Neil Warnock is an admirer of the 29-year- old. The perception of Green at Championship level is slightly different to how he is viewed in Ireland.
Trapattoni likes the player's tenacity and his ability in his favoured 4-4-2 system. However, Green operates more offensively at club level, as Warnock's testimony yesterday demonstrated.
"I've always thought he was the kind of player who can create goals as well as score them," said Warnock after agreeing a two-year contract with Green. "I've seen him grow since his days at Doncaster and I'm delighted to get him."
