1 LONGFORD TOWN 1
1st div promotion play-off second leg
(Waterford United win 3-1 on agg)
THE chants "We are going up" rang around the RSC last night as Waterford United overcame Longford Town on aggregate after the second leg of their First Division play-off.
Following their 2-0 success at Flancare Park, Paul O'Brien's side seemed to be cruising their way into the play-off final against Dundalk when Peter Higgins put his side in front. But it was Waterford native Alan Kirby that ensured the game finished level with a last-minute finish.
After netting within 39 seconds in the first leg at Flancare Park, it took the Blues nine minutes to find the breakthrough in this game when Peter Keegan laid the ball off into the path of Seanie Maguire and although Longford 'keeper Craig Hyland saved, Higgins was on hand to score.
Waterford were reduced to 10 men on 50 minutes by referee Keith Callanan, who for the third time this season produced a straight red card -- sub Seamus Long seemed to win the ball on Austin Skelly, much to dismay of the home faithful.
Kirby snatched the draw late on but Waterford advance.
